Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a condition characterized by its effect on connective tissue. This generally leads to significant flexibility, hypermobility and instability causing full, body-wide issues including chronic pain and fatigue. Frequent comorbidities include POTS, gut dysmotility, neuropathy, sleep disorders and anxiety.
While EDS is widespread throughout the body, it might not feel like you are flexible throughout the body. Sometimes, it manifests as having joints that move too far, or the inaccurate phrase “double jointed”. Knees and elbows tend to be the most obvious here. In a normal body those joints do not hyperextend past neutral (or straight), but when your connective tissue is too stretchy, it just doesn’t hold those joints where they should be. Then, on the flip side, sometimes our body has parts that feel really tight.
Across healthcare, treatment for EDS is limited at this time. Not all healthcare professionals understand the nuances of treating this kind of multifactorial syndrome. Tailoring treatment for each individual and their specific physical needs is the best approach for managing the physical symptoms from EDS.
"How do I find a medical professional who treats EDS and hypermobility?" Right here.
With Physio Flows you get one on one, specialized care driven by what you actually need without the interference of insurance limitations and provided by a physical therapist who understands what it is like to live with hypermobility on a daily basis.
